Boat Registration by State: Fees, Requirements, and Renewal Guides

Every motorized boat operated on public waterways in the United States must be registered with the state where it is primarily used. The process, fees, and requirements vary significantly from state to state.

This guide covers boat registration in the seven states where FindABoat has the most dealer inventory: Florida, Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana.

Florida

Florida has more registered boats than any other state — over 900,000. The registration system is managed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) through county tax collector offices.

Fees (Annual)

Boat LengthRegistration Fee
Under 12 ft$5.25
12-15 ft$16.25
16-25 ft$27.00
26-39 ft$55.50
40-64 ft$82.50
65+ ft$109.50

Plus a 6% sales tax on the purchase price (for new registrations). Florida caps the sales tax on boats at $18,000 — meaning any boat over $300,000 pays the same $18,000 max.

Required Documents

  • Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (new boat) or title (used)
  • Bill of sale
  • Valid photo ID
  • Proof of sales tax payment

How to Register

Register in person at your county tax collector’s office or online through the Florida DHSMV GoRenew portal.

Florida-Specific Notes

  • No boating license required for adults 18+. Minors born after January 1, 1988 must complete an approved boating safety course.
  • Decals must be displayed on both sides of the bow.
  • Registration renews annually based on your birth month.

Texas

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) handles boat registration. Texas uses a 2-year registration cycle, which saves you a trip compared to annual states.

Fees (Biennial — Every 2 Years)

Boat LengthRegistration Fee

16-25 ft$53
26-39 ft$110

South Carolina

South Carolina has one of the simplest and cheapest registration systems in the country — a flat $10 fee for 3 years, regardless of boat size.

Fees

ItemFee
Registration (3 years)$10
Title$15
Sales tax5% (max $500)

South Carolina caps the sales tax on boats at $500 — making it one of the most tax-friendly states for expensive boat purchases. A $200,000 boat pays the same $500 sales tax as a $10,000 boat.

Required Documents

  • Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin or title
  • Bill of sale
  • Valid photo ID

How to Register

Register through the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) online or at a regional office.

South Carolina-Specific Notes

  • No boating license required (but a boater education course is strongly recommended).
  • The $500 sales tax cap is a major reason boat buyers register in SC.

Tips for All States

  1. Keep your title in a safe place. A lost title means a trip to the DMV and a 2-4 week wait in most states. Never store it on the boat.
  2. Register before you launch. Operating an unregistered motorized vessel on public waterways is a citation in every state.
  3. Check sales tax before you buy. South Carolina’s $500 cap and Florida’s $18,000 cap can save you thousands on expensive boats. Some buyers legitimately take delivery in tax-friendly states.
  4. Display your numbers correctly. Registration numbers go on both sides of the bow, read left to right, in block letters at least 3 inches high, in a contrasting color to the hull.
  5. Budget for registration in your ownership costs. Use our Boat Cost of Ownership Calculator to factor in registration, insurance, marina, fuel, and maintenance for a complete annual cost picture.
