A jet boat uses a jet drive propulsion system instead of a traditional propeller. Water is drawn in through an intake and expelled at high pressure through a nozzle, providing thrust. This makes jet boats extremely maneuverable and safe in shallow water since there is no exposed propeller.

Jet boats are excellent for watersports. They offer instant acceleration for pulling skiers and tubers, quick turns, and the lack of an exposed prop makes them safer when riders fall near the boat. Yamaha and Scarab jet boats are popular choices for active watersports families.

Jet boats can operate in as little as 18 to 24 inches of water, making them ideal for shallow rivers, sandbars, and skinny coastal waters. The absence of a propeller and lower unit means you will not damage drive components in shallow areas the way you would with an outboard.

Jet boats are less fuel-efficient than prop-driven boats, especially at cruising speeds. They can be louder at wide-open throttle, have less low-speed maneuverability (no thrust at idle), and the jet intake can suck up debris in weedy areas. Maintenance costs are comparable to outboards.
