What Boat Should I Buy?

First-time owners typically do best with a pontoon, bowrider, or small center console (18–22 ft). These are easy to operate, forgiving, affordable, and versatile. Pontoons are the most beginner-friendly overall.

For inshore and bay fishing, a bay boat or flats boat (18–24 ft) is ideal. For offshore, a center console (22–35 ft) provides the range and stability for bluewater trips. Bass boats dominate freshwater lake fishing.

For 1–4 people on lakes or calm bays, 18–22 ft is sufficient. For 4–8 people or coastal waters, 22–28 ft. For open ocean or 8+ people, 28 ft and above. Bigger is not always better — larger boats cost significantly more to store, fuel, and maintain.
