Pontoon boats are the most versatile boats on the water. They excel at cruising, entertaining guests, family swimming, casual fishing, and even watersports like tubing and skiing. Their flat, stable deck makes them perfect for relaxing on lakes, rivers, and calm bays.

Standard twin-tube pontoons with 90 to 150 HP motors cruise comfortably at 20 to 25 mph. Performance tritoon models (three pontoons) with 250 to 400 HP engines can reach 40 to 50 mph or more, making them capable watersports platforms.

Pontoon boats can handle calm coastal waters, protected bays, and the Intracoastal Waterway. However, they are not designed for open ocean conditions. Waves, strong currents, and rough seas can be dangerous for pontoons due to their flat hull design and low freeboard.

Capacity depends on size. A 16 to 18 foot pontoon typically holds 6 to 8 people. Mid-size 20 to 22 foot models fit 10 to 12 passengers. Large 24 to 28 foot pontoons can accommodate 14 to 16 passengers, making them ideal for parties and group outings.

New pontoon boats start around $20,000 for basic 16-foot models. Popular mid-range pontoons from Bennington, Sun Tracker, or Harris run $35,000 to $70,000. Premium tritoons with high-performance packages can exceed $100,000. Used pontoons offer excellent value starting around $10,000.
